Love this story...
I was pleasantly surprised to be seated next to a very handsome man during a conference. We flirted casually through dinner, then grew restless as the dignitaries gave speeches. During one particularly long-winded lecture, my new friend drew a # sign on a cocktail napkin. Elated, I wrote down my phone number. Looking startled for a moment, he drew another # sign, this time adding an X to the upper-left-hand corner. ~Kari Moore (via Reader's Digest)

the tuesday that felt like a monday.
my goal was to clean. i didn't get very far, but i managed to put away all of my clothes, make some room in my closet, sort through a bunch of my papers that were covering rick's desk and almost finish my little photo project i started on the fridge. i also found a 1950's blonde wood desk on craigslist that will soon become my craft space. so now... desk :: craft space as kitchen table :: food space. (finally). i also cleaned the cat box (one of my not-so-favorite activities) and watched the hills online.
funny story: this weekend when rick and i went to my favorite spanish food store, we were in the checkout line when i remembered i wanted a head of iceberg lettuce, so rick ran back to get one... fast forward to tonight's dinner: i made the veges and rick was in charge of making the salad. he shredded the lettuce; cut up the cucumbers and the tomatoes; got out the olives, croutons and the walnuts. (we make a goood salad!!) so i walk over to grab some lettuce and notice that it's CABBAGE. he had accidentally grabbed a head of cabbage instead iceberg lettuce... which isn't a uncommon mistake for guys to make in a grocery store, i'm sure. ;) so now we're stuck with a fresh head of cabbage that neither of us will eat. so i walk over to our neighbors' to see if she could use it. she says "oh sure. i can't remember the last time i had cabbage!! and i hate to see food go to waste," so she takes it. then she says, "hey, wait. do you want some lettuce?!" then hands me a HUMUGOUS head of really nice romaine lettuce she bought at a organic farmer's market. then she asks, "do you need some tomatoes too???" just thought that was one of the nicest things ever. she also told me she'll food-swap whenever i wanted, hehe. moral of the story: one small act of kindness brings back double.
during dinner, rick and i watched A Simple Plan which i HIGHLY recommend. i can't recall a time when i wanted to describe a movie as "gripping," until now. the plot is very suspenseful and will have you guessing until the very end. the plot is very comparable to something Andre Dubus would create. and since most well-written scripts were adapted from a novel, novella or short story, i was not surprised to learn the movie is the screenplay version of the novel A Simple Plan by Scott B. Smith. according to imdb.com, brad pitt was asked to play the main character, which would have ruined the film. you could roll brad pitt around in mud, but he'll still look too "pretty" and not rugged enough to portray a farm-raised working man. the casting in this film is right on and the acting is highly believable.
around 9:30 pm, rick and went swimming. :) it was a warm night and the pool was even warmer. i haven't been swimming at night since last summer.
tomorrow: work for michael. early.
friday: pick up my "new" desk. :)
saturday: promo.

HILARIOUS.
today i worked for michael in a detached office at his house. it was my first time working for him since i've been back from vacation and before i left for vacation, i accidentally left a bag in his car. we shot a black-tie wedding and i was afraid i wouldn't be "fancy" enough, so i brought along an extra shirt just in case i needed to change. since i usually wear all black and this shirt is cream-colored, i also brought a different bra. and naturally, i accidentally leave it his car. so today michael shows me his home office, checks his voicemails on his new iPhone and then says this, jokingly:
"Hey, by the way, you left your bra in my car. What if my wife found it?! Thanks A LOT. That'd be like me leaving a condom in your car."
so we laugh and he explains what albums i needed work on and attends to the company he and his wife had over. two hours later, he returns to the office with his wife. "wait'll you here this!!" he says. apparently brandon (a co-worker) stopped by michael's house and pulled him aside to talk to him in private, away from michael's wife.
"you might want to check your voicemail," he told michael. it turns out that michael's iPhone somehow recorded him saying what he said about my bra and... set it as his outgoing message!!!!
"Hey, by the way, you left your bra in my car. What if my wife found it?! Thanks A LOT. That'd be like me leaving a condom in your car." *BEEP!!*
HAHAHAHAHA. imagine that!!!! and the best part is... people were actually calling and getting that message. if someone calls the studio for michael and he doesn't answer, the call gets forwarded to his cell phone. the ladies who work at the studio heard it and michael's not sure how many people got his voicemail. the ironic part: michael's wife (who also found this whole situation to be funny), is a therapist who also deals with marriage counseling!!!!
moral of the story: be careful what you say in front of you iPhone!! HAHAHAHA.

sugar and spice and everything nice...
that's what little girls are made of.
funny story:
rick and i were doing dishes and making dinner when rick saw two little girls from our kitchen window. they were outside their apartment gathering painting supplies.
"we should go paint with them," he said.
the girls had paint up and down their arms and one was holding a shallow cardboard box with a string attached around her neck.
"they're not painting, they're selling stuff," i said.
"No, they're painting," rick reiterated.
"i should know... i was once a little girl."
so rick continues with the dishes and i step into the living room. miss gray lets out a loud "MRRRREOWWW" and the doorbell rings.
"who is it???" i whisper to rick.
rick, not wanting to say who it was since they could see him throught the kitchen window says, "you'll see."
during the .15 seconds i hesitated to open the door, my mind raced. at first i thought it was someone from our apartment complex office. then i imagined it was aldrin stopping by to show off his new miniature golden retriever puppy.
but to my surprise... it was those two little girls. SELLING STUFF. finger paintings and faces painted on cardboard squares. that's why rick didn't want to admit who was at the door. i almost couldn't contain myself.
"would you like to buy some paintings???" the little blonde with the box asked.
"these are crosses and this is God," the other little girl said. "and this one is rock n' roll man. and this this best one... these are flowers..."
i forget what they were calling them, people-somethings, but i bought one for 25 cents although one of the little girls was even "going to make a deal" with me if i bought one of the finger paintings. (it would be 25 cents instead of 35 cents).
here's what i bought:

on the back:

"sorry about the tape," the little girl with the box around her neck said. "it was the best girl one, so that's why it was on display."
"and this is the best guy one," the other little girl chimed in pointing to the other painting attached to the string.
after i paid my quarter, the little blonde girl glanced at her friend with "holy-crap-i-can't-believe-this-is-working/we're-going-to-be-rich" smile. and that made it all worth it.
and as soon as i shut the door, rick got a big "i told you so!!!!"
i had to call my mother to tell her the story. "doesn't rick know about all the crap you used to try to sell???" she asked. (my dad's biker friends used to have to visit my "store" in my treehouse and, of course, feel obligated to buy whatever little trinkets i was pushing. i also used to sell stuff to raise money to save the manatees. and once i made my grandparents pay to join my club where they'd receive homemade arts & crafts every month). i guess it's just one of those things little girls do. i wonder if i could get away with it now. ;)
my grandmother's reply:
good morning jena; I read your blog this morning and remembered visiting your gift shop or treehouse store. i remembered how you would sell me and ed things that we had bought for you. we didn't even get a discount. everything had prices on them and that was it, quite the little business girl when all else failed you would smile and look cute, that clinched the sale for sure.

check the tech, 311 in LA.
311 in irvine 08.19.07.
rick and i went to the 311 show in irvine... my 18th 311 show!! our friend cory (who i met at a 311 show in 2004), was there as well as a handful of familiar faces. i took along the digital rebel camera my friend hal has graciously been letting me borrow for an extended amount of time. i wasn't sure if i was going to bother to bring the camera in the show but the tickets didn't say "NO CAMERAS ALLOWED" and i knew i'd be kicking myself in the ass if i didn't take the camera so i called cory who was approaching the entrance of the venue to inquire about the camera situation. he told me that digital cameras were allowed as long as they didn't have a detachable lens. which, of course, the rebel has. :(
so i bring the camera. we get the entrance and i gravitate away from a mean-looking security lady's line toward a guy who seems to not be giving anyone a problem. the guy checks my bag and asks me to take out the camera. the conversation went like this:
GUY: *sees the large ass camera*
ohhh man... does this lens come off???
ME: *"twists" the lens without pushing the button in*
No.
GUY: oh good, that just saved you a trip [back to your car] because my manager is standing right there.
apparently they're afraid someone is going to throw their $300+ detachable lens into the crowd or at 311. who does that?!?!
the guy proceeds to ask for the cap from our bottle of water because that too can be a projectile. (why not throw the whole bottle?!!) really didn't make sense.
so we make our way toward the TINY, intimate pit (which i had bought tickets for well in advance through 311's presale)... only to be told we didn't have pit tickets. we had "orchestra" tickets. row N. which were still really good seats, but a major let-down if you thought you'd be in the pit. so now i'm inspired to write a nasty letter to ticketmaster who led me to believe i was purchasing two GA (general admission) pit tickets. those bastards. but it worked out because rick and i still danced around and he didn't have to worry about someone accidentally ripping out the stitches in his hand. YE-OUCH. that would suck. and i also got to take photos of the entire band, which is rare because usually i am only far enough away to take photos of one or two band members (which i am NOT complaining about because that is how close i like to be).
the opening bands were Matisyahu, the Wailers, Pato Banton and the Expendables. the Wailers were really good, but i could have done without the others. although it was definitely interesting to see Matisyahu perform. he's much skinnier and more awkward than i imagined. he was wearing a navy blue button-down dress shirt, khakis, white sneakers and a yamaka. he did start off the show wearing a navy blue blazer and a hisidic jew hat, but i am hesistant to believe that his image is more than just an image. (he grew up in new york and was a little druggie who used to follow Phish) but good for him that he found Judaism and is able to be a role model and so forth.
needless to say, 311 rocked and rick and i had a good time and we sang along to every song. rick and i played "would you rather" from the moment we left the venue until we reached our destination... a 90 mile trek. and i only remember a handful of the questions we asked each other. i know i asked rick "would you rather work a normal job until you're 65 or would you rather only work until your 45 but have to commute 3 hours to work." (he'd opted for the former). if we didn't play the game, we probably would have fallen asleep because we were that exhausted.
and apparently i was THAT exhausted because in the middle of the night miss gray was meowing next to my side of the bed and i dangled my hand over the edge of the bed and called "hexum... hexum..." (hexum is my cat back home). rick thinks i was really delusionally calling nick hexum into bed. luckily my cat has the same name. ;)

mystery solved.
just have to share a hilarious moment that happened while i was on my grandmother's laptop (that once belonged to my cousin). i was on the log-on page when i asked...
me: so, did we ever find out what Bohica means??? what kind of name is that?! it's gotta mean something...
my grandmother: yeah, it means "bend over, here it comes again..." anthony and vincent made it.
me: *dumbfounded* and laughing.
HAHAHAHAHA. aye my grandmother. gotta love her. <3

aye, my grandmother.
my grandmother is an avid reader of my blog and after reading my last entry, this paragraph in particular:
"by sunday i was itching to hug miss gray and eat lots of pretzels and upload more photos onto flickr. and rick was itching to play resident evil. hehehe."
my grandmother wanted to know...
"why did you call [rick] the evil resident???"
hahahaha!! i love my grandmother.

kittenless :(
well we came home kittenless. which is both good and bad. good because i really can't afford its shots right now or the cost to get it spayed/neutered... and bad because who doesn't want a kitten?! i did come home with a large humming bird feeder that the vicious little suckers have been fighting over. and i'm trying to find some cheap patio furniture for our balcony because i am convinced that we would sit outside if we had a table and chairs.
today is roxie's birthday. she's 1!! check out my flickr tribute to her. i uploaded some silly ones.
and because it's her bday and because this is a funny story (sorta), here's how i obtained my [mom's] dog: my mom was looking on petfinder.com for a german shepherd. she made the mistake of leaving the internet browser open. i went on and searched for a pomeranian and found one named "princess elizabeth." local too. i went to the animal shelter (about 45 minutes away). i saw her in the main office laying in a little bed and i bent down. she lifted up her adorable little head and walked over to me. as soon as i picked her up, i got yelled out by this heinious bitch of a woman who works at the shelter. "M'AM, M'AM, don't handle the puppy please!!" ooooooook. so the bitch made me fill out some forms and i wasn't able to adopt the puppy because i was living with my mother and i was told the dog had to meet my mother first. the bitch also had to see my driver's license. then i made the mistake of telling her we had two cats. the bitch called my vet and then told me that because my cats were overdue for *insert unnecessary shot here* that i wouldn't be able to adopt the puppy anyway. i was told i needed to take my cats to the vet, get the shots and then bring back proof, then i would be eligible to get the puppy. and then the bitch added, "and by the time you do that, she'll probably be gone because a lot of people are interested in her." sooo i drove to my friend barry's house and asked his mom to go get the dog for me. she was all willing but not able to because she was getting her kids ready to go to an amusement park. but she did rant and rave about what a *insert a myriad of vulgar names here* that bitch is. apparently barry's mom wanted to put her dog up for adoption but that bitch wouldn't let her and told her she "shouldn't have gotten a dog in the first place." the next morning, i convinced my cousin anthony to adopt the puppy for me. getting him out of bed that early was an accomplishment in itself. i made him and his girlfriend drop me off down the street from the shelter so the bitch didn't see me. i was told the dog cost $300 to adopt, but the bitch told anthony it was $400 and even after i told him how much she told me, like a sucker, he paid (with my money) the $400. :( but the bitch gave him no problem. him and his girlfriend were able to hold the dog and walk out with it that day. and so that's how i got roxie, the dog formally named "princess elizabeth," hahaha. and after i moved to california, roxie became my mom's dog. she likes my mom waaaaay more than she likes me.
tomorrow i have a job interview to be the personal assistant to the host of a reality show, so hopefully that will go well. the best part is... it's local!! it's actually being filmed in the basement of a nearby hotel. :)
song i can't stop listening to: CSS - "off the hook." yet another catchy song from them.

giraffes, steel drums and magicians.
(and don't steal that for a band name!!) hahaha.
friday night summarized into one sentence: i ate pierogies, kicked rick's butt in scrabble and we watched Rock Star (which was awful).
saturday, today: rick and i went over to his parent's house, ate some lunch and did a load of laundry. while we were there, rick's sister and her family stopped by after a trip to the santa barbara zoo. you'll never guess what the highlight of the day was for rick's almost-5-year-old neice...
"there was a giraffe... and it was PEEING and then another giraffe come over and DRANK IT!!!!" she told us. "that's what i want to do when i become a giraffe."
HAHAHA. after our visit, rick and i met up with his friend james, his wife sarah, their daughter and their friend jack. i had never met sarah before. she reminded me of a cross between the two NICEST people i know -- my best friend andrea and my former second grade teacher who has become a long-time family friend. so we ate chinese food over sarah's parent's house and then went to a CSULB (cal state long beach) steel-drum concert. it was REALLY kewl. the show was held in an elementary school auditorium that was all decked out island-stylee. there had to have been at least forty people, all wearing hawaiian shirts) banging on drums or symbols or cow bells. they played a couple Bob Marley songs including "Is This Love," "I Shot The Sheriff," and "Exodus." they also covered the Carnaval song from Black Orpheus and Harry Belafonte's "Jump In The Line" as well as a few original songs.
and if you think that sounded kewl, get this... james's friend jack is a magician and he might be using me in one of his acts as the girl he "saws" in half!! HAHAHA. how awesome would that be?!!
tomorrow: the pola-nerds are meeting up. rebecca and i were expecting to go but i will be assisting ryan williams at 2:30 and rebecca has to take her mom to the airport so i guess we're no-shows :( which stinks cause i really want to meet the pola-crew!!!! BUT i will busy preparing for something a tad kewler. sorry pola-crew, there is little you can do to compete with FIRESWINGERS. :O
p.s. i took a bunch of awesome polaroids that i can't wait to upload.
and f.y.i. lions and tigers can't purr... but cougars can.

i didn't get my picture taken with chris rock!!
today my mom and i lounged by the pool/went swimming. we had tickets to see the late late show with craig ferguson. the guest was andy garcia!! we got there on time but had to park in the parking garage at the grove because the security guy told us the CBS lot was full (or so we thought). so we stood in line, got numbers on our hands and were told to sit on a bench. the taping of the price of right must have just ended because we saw dozens of audience members/contestants. about 80% of the price is right crew bought something in the gift store after the show and ALL OF THEM looked like they had just visited disney world for the first time... i never saw a happier bunch of people, hehe. so we're finally about to be called into the show... there were about 30 of us still waiting and one of the five intern girls comes out and tells us they've reached capacity. we were pretty pissed because their audience wrangling method SUCKS. people were RANDOMLY assigned bench numbers (1, 2, 3 or 5). we were 2's. the girl called bench 1, bench 3, THEN 2... they didn't get to bench 5 at all. some of the people left over were among the first thirty people there!! (REALLY sucked to be them!!) it was ridiculous. they KNOW there's only 150 seats, yet they let more people in. they didn't bother to number us according to the order we arrived. we even had to sit through two lame prep guys trying to pump us up for the audience. the part that really sucks is that we originally sat on bench 1, but then moved to bench 2 after we realized that we were on the "wrong" bench. (not like anyone checked). it was all just a bunch of BS. we were given a number to call that guarantees us "VIP" seats to another taping. "VIP" only meaning they will let us like they were supposed to the first time. sooo my mom and i headed back to the grove and went into a few shops there. i bought a big, clunky heart necklace and redeemed my free pair of chones at victoria's secret. we saw CHRIS ROCK just standing by the door in barnes and nobles. i wouldn't have even noticed him if two guys didn't go up to him and ask to have their pictures taken with him. my mom and i weren't even sure if it was him at first... he looks REALLY skinny and YOUNG (until you approach him, then you can see his gray whiskers). he wasn't nice or approachable, he just was standing there like he didn't want to be there. i think he was just [begrudgingly] out in public to spark attention to his new movie. my mom and debated whether we should ask for a photo because we aren't really fans of his, but it seemed like the thing to do. afterall, you don't see chris rock just standing in every bookstore. having just exited the craig ferguson fiasco, i didn't have a camera on me (shocking, i know... but they weren't allowed in the studio that we didn't even get to go in) so my mom takes the photo of me and chris rock with her camera phone. at the moment she is taking the photo: rick calls and, mom hangs up on him AND the phone battery is dying. my mom takes the photo and says... "i don't even want to admit what just happened." the photo couldn't be saved because her photo capacity was at 100%. story of the day. it soooo figures!! hahaha!! i blame everything on my blue eyeliner... last time i wore it rick, tim, aldo and i weren't able to see incubus on jimmy kimmel. ugh. so i took some polaroids on hollywood and highland and we called it a day. we got back to the apartment(after sitting in some traffic) then rick, my mom and i enjoyed a nice dinner at the cheesecake factory. at least that went well.

priceless.
9:25 pm: my grandmother calls (that's 12:25 am her time) all excited about her new discovery:
"how come nobody told me i could play music cds on my computer?!!!!" she wants to know.
i didn't even think to explain the CD-ROM feature because i figured she wasn't going to be using it that often. my cousin gave her a laptop over the summer and i taught her how to email, google and check my flickr -- y'know, all the important stuff. ;) since then, my grandmother has become pretty good at using the computer. (i'm so proud!!) she'll send me funny e-mails and comment on everything i post online. (i'm sure she'll have something to say about THIS post!!!! hehehe). i also got her hooked on text twist, a word game she refers to as "twix" for short. "well it's easier than saying "text twist," she'll say.
but anyway, back to my story...
"i never knew that all this time we could have played this cd in the player and it would come up on the tv with all these colors!! it must be a video too," she says.
"huh????" I ask.
"i put this soothing sounds cd in the computer and the music played and there were all these beautiful colors and designs and it played along to the music. one was called 'battery' and it looks like..."
YUP, that's when i realize what she is talking about: the default shapes that form on windows media player. hahaha.
she gets mad when i start laughing, but i assure her it is only because i thought it was cute. i love my grandmother!! xoxo
