I haven't cut my hair in 1 1/2 years but now more than ever, I have an urge to chop it into a bob (angled so that it's a little longer in the front than it is in the back).
My hair is the longest its been since pre-kindergarten. I'm not sure why I keep growing out my hair. It wraps itself around my arms when I swim. It tangles itself in knots when I leave my car windows rolled down. It clings to my back when it's humid outside and I'm wearing a tank top. If you run your fingers through the carpet in my apartment, it will look like you've just dissembled a tumbleweed. Before I can vacuum, we (and by "we" I mean Rick) have to CUT through a wad of my hair that is continuously wrapped around the rollers of the vacuum cleaner.
But when hair gets this long it becomes an entity - a body part you're reluctant to amputate. I want the happy-go-lucky feeling dogs get when you shave off their fur for the summer, but I'm worried I may regret going scissor-happy. Every time I ask someone's opinion on cutting my hair their first reaction is always "NO!!" followed by the obligatory "but it's your hair so, do whatever you want." Yes, I can trim off three or four inches but I hate the in-between length - so it's all of nothing!!
I'll cut my hair when it gets in the way of every day life like using the toilet, for example. Once my hair is long enough to dangle in the toilet bowl, it's getting cut. In the meantime, I'll keep reminding myself how badly I wished I looked like a long-haired Roxy model back in the day (hello 9th and 10th grade!!) and just deal with this hair.

what i had for lunch...

medium sized original with three toppings: strawberries, raspberries and pineapple.
on my "lunch break" from working with my favorite boss dave, i stopped at pinkberry in beverly hills. driving in beverly hills SUCKS. especially during tourist season. i watched a car attempt to pull out of a parking spot onto beverly blvd. he, of course, was blocking the road but mr. angry man had to pull up right behind him and laaaay on his horn. the guy backing up acknowledged him, then proceeded to back up even further (in attempt to get out of the way) but in doing so, wound up backing right into angry man's car. thus, making him even angrier.
back to me and my lunch... pinkberry and i have an odd relationship. it's sort of become my guilty pleasure. the first time i've ever tried it was back in march when my friend lindsay was visiting me. before then, i never had any desire to try pinkberry... it seemed too trendy and i couldn't understand why it was such a popular place when it only served three flavors... none of which are pink. so i got an original (because the green tea sample tasted nothing like green tea) and it tasted like sour milk... not so much as spoiled milk, but sour -- as if it was trying to taste like lemon but couldn't overcome the pungent taste of plain yogurt. i couldn't even finish the small and rick took one spoonful before tossing it in the garbage. lindsay, on the other hand, got the coffee flavor with raspberries and LOVED it.
so flash forward to me working a promo on a hot day, somewhere within walking distance from a pinkberry. i went there on my break, i tried it again... and it wasn't so bad!! so i'm guessing it's an acquired taste. it's not a habit i go out of my way for (yet) and i'm hoping it will never become one because a medium original with three toppings is almost $6... and that seems pricey for almost-sour-tasting frozen yogurt so i usually opt for no toppings. rick still thinks it tastes awful. and lindsay thinks i'm blatantly addicted. i still think pinkberry is waaaay overrated but i'm not going to lie, i sorta look forward to eating it now. O:)

over 47 million Americans (over 16% of the population) are without health insurance... and i'm one of them. :(
my myriad of drugs:
perk #321 of being a freelancer: unlimited sick days.
i couldn't imagine sitting in a cubicle surrounded by green phlegm-infested tissues for 8, 9, 10 hours. no way.
disadvantage of being a freelancer: no health insurance unless you buy it yourself.
so i've self-diagnosed myself with bronchitis and i've been coughing my brains out for the past two weeks. this started out as a cold i caught from my boss james and has progressed to whatever-it-is-now. and i don't know if it's because i have a deviated septum or what, but i have not been able to taste or smell for a week now. i am refusing to go to a doctor because i don't have health insurance and i don't feel like paying $100+ for antibiotics, so i am taking amoxicillin that rick's parents brought back from mexico. (they sell 58 or so tablets of amoxicillin in mexico for $30... too bad the united states is a greedy bastard and makes us pay an arm and a leg for the same products other countries sell at afforadable prices).

here's what bronchitis looks like:
i am also attributing this bout with bronchitis to the poor air quality in los angeles... thanks LA!!if you're a smoker, expect to develop chronic bronchitis... one of the many guaranteed side effects you are paying for with each cigarette. (which is why i will never understand why the facts alone are not enough for people to quit smoking, my mother included). but i regress... as i watch shopgirl for the umpteenth time.
P.S. it also should be noted that while i was sick i threw too many tissues into the toilet (because i felt bad throwing them all away) needless to say the toilet got clogged and impatient me had to try to flush it one more time and the water rose over the seat and spilled onto the floor, covering our little bathroom floor area with 1/2 inch of water. luckily it wasn't enough to reach the carpeting but it was enough to make the downstair's neighbors' ceiling leak. so the toilet fixed itself and my mom ran out to buy a mop because we didn't have one and i managed to break the mop within 5 minutes of using it. don't ask me how. i just snapped the part that connects the mop to the stick. rick felt bad and told me he'd deal with the mess and picked up a mop on his way home. my boyfriend loves me. moral of the story: ever notice how much dust a tissue makes??? that can't be healthy to inhale in between nose blows.

i have a new appreciation for shopping carts...
what a crazy, hectic week this has been!! rick and i moved out of our nice, big apartment into something less nice and less big but it's located in a convenient area, dave grohl lives in the same town and we will be saving money... so it's all gravy. (let's bring that phrase back, hehe).
packing and hauling one year's worth of accumulated crap to the apartment was quite a challenge (not to mention trying to fit a large entertainment center into a small elevator) but thank goodness for tim and aldrin and shopping carts!! when we signed the lease the manager said, "if you're going to use shopping carts, don't leave them in the halls because they are a fire hazard." my face must have said "what the hell?!" because the manager then added, "some people like to carry their groceries or laundry up that way." ooooh.
well, thank goodness no one listens because i was able to find THREE shopping carts in the hallways and boy did those things come in handy!! unfortunately the apartment is not cart friendly. there's speed bumps in the parking area; you need to open the door to the elevator with a key; there are double doors that are kept shut that separate the hallways... a lot of obstacles. and on top of everything i was SICK. runny nose, fever, cough... all that good stuff.
rick and i worked every day last week but we managed to get a lot done by pulling a few all-nighters (and we basically had to in order to beat traffic). i have yet to see this apartment in the daytime. i left early on sunday to go home for the holidays, leaving rick behind with a yowling cat and our old apartment still 1/5 full of my belongings that needed to be packed and moved by monday and A LOT to be cleaned so we could get our deposit back. i still feel bad i couldn't help but because my boyfriend is the best ever, he didn't mind. in return, i promised: to keep the kitchen table at our new place perpetually clean (which is a quite a challenge for me); to keep our new apartment more organized in general; and rick and i vowed to never do anything THAT last-minute again.

10-12-07 stream of consciousness
i already ate breakfast but i go back to the fridge for two more almonds but two becomes four and four becomes six. and six becomes more pretzels. i crouch down and hug the cat, lifting her front feet off the floor so she's standing upright. "this is what it'd be like if you were a human," i whisper.
i want to reinvent my way of writing because i haven't written a worthwhile poem since i had to in college. i spend an embarrassing amount of time copying and pasting a stranger's fragmented thoughts into a word document and file it away for inspiration. unlike her i don't have the booze, the drugs or the crazy friends (nor do i want them) but i wish i could write like her. i know she thinks she can't write, but she can.
my editor (aka my grandmother) calls. "i think you meant 'secluded' but you put 'excluded'," she says. and she's right. my problem is i can't stay focused. there are too many things i want to create. poems, photos, jewelry, greeting cards, tee shirts. you name it. the dishes still aren't in the dishwasher that leaves soap crystals stuck to the the plates.
i edit photos and realize i haven't left the apartment today. i need to cash two checks and dust my bedroom. my best friend comes to visit in three days but i haven't spoken to her in two weeks. i turn a fisheye shot into an interesting double exposure, make it pink and green and title it "if malibu were a snow globe." a phrase that inspires a lovely shell of a poem in my head. if only i could write poems again.
it's fall and it's cold, but not as cold as it would be if i was home. (although my body is convinced there is no temperature difference today). i add dish soap to the dishwasher because the crystals don't work and we don't have anything else. five minutes pass and i'm scooping suds off the floor with a paper plate. swirly piles of foam fill the kitchen sink. the last time this happened was when i wanted the dishes to be "extra clean". miss gray meows for food. i shake the bowl and she thinks it's new. i wish i were that easy to please.
i'm eating the pretzel nuggets my grandmother mailed me yesterday which reminds me i have things to mail. my boyfriend calls. it's about the perfume i want that the store doesn't carry. so i have to find it online. my best friend calls. she's packing. it is supposed to be in the 70s while she's here so i told her to bring layers and 80s clothes. we're going out on thursday. "i have to pick out ice cream toppings and bake fifty cupcakes for sunday," she complains. she used to like making cupcakes. she's keeping an eye out for a new job because she's tired of dealing with a bitchy boss and coming home late and getting up early, but she loves the stockings and work clothes. (i hate the word pantyhose).
there's a washcloth pocked with mascara marks my mother draped over the tub. i'm hesitant to throw it in the laundry basket because time will make it seem like she hasn't been here in a week. she's home, living out of her suitcase and has a lunch date tomorrow but she doesn't know what to wear. it's either a striped long-sleeved sweater that she she bought me for Christmas one year or what she wore on Mother's Day.
it's nearly 7 now and we haven't eaten dinner yet. andrea was supposed to call me in an hour but an hour was hours ago. she's probably still packing. i'm eager to see the photos dave and his friend shot of me yesterday when i was wearing the pink wig that made me look like natalie portman in "closer." the wig was too kewl not to ask to borrow. my minds churning with ideas for halloween. we still need to buy candy. yesterday i was a model, tomorrow i am a PA, next week a beauty consultant. it's like halloween every day.
it looked like rain all afternoon and tonight it finally burst. there's still foam in the bottom of the dishwasher so i run it again on "light wash." next time i'll do them by hand. my boyfriend started calling the cat "PITA" (Pain In The Ass) and gets mad when i ask him to throw the asparagus into the steamer pot because the cat is comfy on my lap. after dinner, miss gray purrrs in his face and throws herself onto his lap and he forgets what a PITA she is.
it's almost 11 and i'm back on pretzels in front of the computer. two nights ago rick and i played scrabble online because we're too lazy to set it up in the living room but it took even longer to play. i take two nuggets out at a time, hoping they'll be the last two but two becomes four and four becomes six. we just finished watching the special features to "one flew over the cuckoo's nest." i never saw the movie in its entirety but i knew something happened to the Indian at the end. i remember my mother being happy with the outcome.
my bedroom is still dusty but the dog crate is finally out of the spare room. "why don't you read over here?" i ask my boyfriend who is still in the living room reading a Brian Wilson biography. i convince myself this is the last pretzel so he won't have to read over my pretzel crunching. there are new dishes in the sink and the cat box still smells but there's always tomorrow. i'm a procrastinator, but at least i'm consistent.
maybe tonight i'll fall asleep in our bed instead of the spare bed, convincing myself under clean sheets that i'll just lie down for two minutes. but two becomes four and four becomes six and pretty soon it's time for my boyfriend to crawl out of bed to turn off the lights, shut down the computer and return me to where i belong.

my to do list.
yesterday i bought snapdragons and yellow daisies and wound up planting them in flower pots on my balcony at 2:30 am. (not surprising). i ran out of potting soil, so i was't able to finish. i also bought packets of basil, parsley, thyme and cherry tomatoe seeds. can't wait to get those started. i have better luck with cactuses (hate the word cacti), but hopefully i will develop a green thumb. when i was home, my mom bought me weird cactuses called "living stones." i've never seen anything like them... check em out:

and they feel even weirder than they look!!
today my goal is to finally clear off the kitchen table so rick has somewhere to eat his cereal. i have officially taken over every surface in the apartment. the kitchen table is covered with paints and mini picture frames. and rick's computer desk (which i have since claimed as my own) is covered with my papers and calendars. it was funny because rick and i were talking about this yesterday while we were waiting for the doctor to take out his stitches and i mentioned how i took over every surface and he was about to refute and say, "no, the snack trays in the living room don't have anything on them..." (because they usually are don't) but yesterday i had my laptop and a photo printer set up on them. whoops!! hehe, a girl needs her space. ;) my reasoning for leaving everything strewn about is: once something is out of sight, it's out of mind and i never finish it. so i leave it around until i finally finish it. makes sense.
starting this weekend, i want to teach myself adobe flash. that should be challenging. i also want to create some more photoshop illustrations because i have plans for those. :)
tonight is a lunar eclipse!! last night rick and i ran up (aka: dragged ourselves up) the mountain to get a better view of the moon. it looked HUGE looming over the freeway but by the time we got back to our apartment and made it to the top of the mountain, it just looked like your average full moon. hopefully tonight i will be able to get some good shots of the eclipse. the moon shots from last night came out pretty good, expect to see some on flickr in the near future.

fourth of july. lucy in the sky. i remember palm trees and the coat of many colors. ~311
hope everyone had a happy 4th of july!!
rick and i went over his parent's house for a BBQ. we picked up aldrin, went over tim's house and browsed through their high school yearbooks. we also ran a few errands then went to see the fireworks from the harbor. there was a little street fair with a live band and a highly amusing old guy who danced like nobody was watching (although he was kind of hard to miss). we wound up sitting on a bridge watching the fireworks from accross the water (and have now been inspired to rent a little boat one of these weekends).
this week: i am finishing up work for dave until the 11th.
this weekend: i am working as 2nd shooter for michael.
next weekend: i am doing promotional work.
i'm also working on albums during the weekdays. i'm trying to get as many gigs as i can right now because i am going home in august for two weeks to see family and friends and i could really use the money. hopefully a lot of jobs will come my way.

i'm sick. :(
yep, i got caught cold. running nose. sore throat. all that fun stuff. i have a busy weekend planned, so i better feel better soon. i've been drinking emergen-C, which is rare because i hate taking any kind of medication/anything, so that better work.
i planned on going to an audition today and then meeting up with my favorite photographer dave nagel to pick up some of his portfolios and see what i need to do while he is away in England taking photos!! (lucky bloke, hehe). so while he is gone i get to be his "studio manager." OoOOoOOOooo, fancy.
but instead, i bascially bummed around all day long, washed off our "new" patio furniture and hung out with miss gray. also, thanks to my grandmother, i ate a lot of pretzels.(she sends me bags of my favorite pretzels in the mail). awwww, what a good grandma. :)
here's how my weekend looks:
friday: interview with Jeff for p/t barista job
saturday: 2nd shooter at wedding with michael brannigan
sunday: maddy house/malibu photo adventures planned with miss rutabega
p.s. there's lots of new photos of miss gray on my flickr. enjoy!!

kittenless :(
well we came home kittenless. which is both good and bad. good because i really can't afford its shots right now or the cost to get it spayed/neutered... and bad because who doesn't want a kitten?! i did come home with a large humming bird feeder that the vicious little suckers have been fighting over. and i'm trying to find some cheap patio furniture for our balcony because i am convinced that we would sit outside if we had a table and chairs.
today is roxie's birthday. she's 1!! check out my flickr tribute to her. i uploaded some silly ones.
and because it's her bday and because this is a funny story (sorta), here's how i obtained my [mom's] dog: my mom was looking on petfinder.com for a german shepherd. she made the mistake of leaving the internet browser open. i went on and searched for a pomeranian and found one named "princess elizabeth." local too. i went to the animal shelter (about 45 minutes away). i saw her in the main office laying in a little bed and i bent down. she lifted up her adorable little head and walked over to me. as soon as i picked her up, i got yelled out by this heinious bitch of a woman who works at the shelter. "M'AM, M'AM, don't handle the puppy please!!" ooooooook. so the bitch made me fill out some forms and i wasn't able to adopt the puppy because i was living with my mother and i was told the dog had to meet my mother first. the bitch also had to see my driver's license. then i made the mistake of telling her we had two cats. the bitch called my vet and then told me that because my cats were overdue for *insert unnecessary shot here* that i wouldn't be able to adopt the puppy anyway. i was told i needed to take my cats to the vet, get the shots and then bring back proof, then i would be eligible to get the puppy. and then the bitch added, "and by the time you do that, she'll probably be gone because a lot of people are interested in her." sooo i drove to my friend barry's house and asked his mom to go get the dog for me. she was all willing but not able to because she was getting her kids ready to go to an amusement park. but she did rant and rave about what a *insert a myriad of vulgar names here* that bitch is. apparently barry's mom wanted to put her dog up for adoption but that bitch wouldn't let her and told her she "shouldn't have gotten a dog in the first place." the next morning, i convinced my cousin anthony to adopt the puppy for me. getting him out of bed that early was an accomplishment in itself. i made him and his girlfriend drop me off down the street from the shelter so the bitch didn't see me. i was told the dog cost $300 to adopt, but the bitch told anthony it was $400 and even after i told him how much she told me, like a sucker, he paid (with my money) the $400. :( but the bitch gave him no problem. him and his girlfriend were able to hold the dog and walk out with it that day. and so that's how i got roxie, the dog formally named "princess elizabeth," hahaha. and after i moved to california, roxie became my mom's dog. she likes my mom waaaaay more than she likes me.
tomorrow i have a job interview to be the personal assistant to the host of a reality show, so hopefully that will go well. the best part is... it's local!! it's actually being filmed in the basement of a nearby hotel. :)
song i can't stop listening to: CSS - "off the hook." yet another catchy song from them.

and because it's her bday and because this is a funny story (sorta), here's how i obtained my [mom's] dog: my mom was looking on petfinder.com for a german shepherd. she made the mistake of leaving the internet browser open. i went on and searched for a pomeranian and found one named "princess elizabeth." local too. i went to the animal shelter (about 45 minutes away). i saw her in the main office laying in a little bed and i bent down. she lifted up her adorable little head and walked over to me. as soon as i picked her up, i got yelled out by this heinious bitch of a woman who works at the shelter.

busy is good.
busy weekend!!
friday i worked 10-5 and saturday i worked 10-6 doing promo jobs. :) sunday i was second shooter at a jewish wedding at the intercontinental in century city. i was left in charge of photographing the bride, her mother and sisters while they were getting ready in their suite that had the most gorgeous view of LA i've ever seen. :O i never experienced a jewish wedding before but i am a fan. the Hora tradition was a trip. it really loosens people up and gets everybody on the dance floor as opposed to non-jewish weddings were most people are hesitant to start dancing. throughout the night i shot candids of family and guests during the ceremony and the reception. i took lots of silly dance floor shots. i didn't get home until 12:30 am, but the night was pretty fun. photographer michael brannigan was a joy to work for. he has a great sense of humor and a lot of energy. he also credits women for the transition wedding photography has taken from being posed and formulated to its current artistic/more aestetic style. there's much to be said about a man who named his daughter after amelia earhart and says mary ellen mark is the most underrated photographer ever. since michael has assistants booked for the majority of his upcoming weddings, i may be doing layouts for his albums. :)
monday i vegetated and ate a lot of watermelon. rick drove his brother to the airport and then we finished watching terms of endearment. not what i expected. at all. it's a pretty long movie with a depressing ending. jack nicholson plays a dirt bag astronaut and he looks as old as he did in 1983 as he does now... which isn't really a compliment, but at least he's consistent. rick and i played uno and he kept winning. aldrin stopped by to let us borrow saw 3 and wound up staying til midnight. we have him hooked on uno now too which could be credited to the fact that he loves to screw people over with the draw two/draw four cards.
most idiotic thing i've done in a while: i singed my eyelashes by trying to smell a candle while it was lit. yeah, that was dumb but my face wasn't even that close to the flame!! i was trying to smell if the candle was giving off a scent but the heat from the flame singed my eyelashes in the corner of my left eye. you can't notice it but i can and it will be a constant reminder (at least til the lashes recuperate) that i sometimes am an idiot. : P
goals for this week include illustrating a story my grandmother wrote, cleaning up the apartment, watching saw 3 (finally) and... i don't know else.
current song stuck in my head:
cold war kids - "hang me out to dry."

hair.
i'm cutting aldrin's hair this week!! :) (finally!!) so i was browsing for some ideas and i got sidetracked (big surprise huh) and started looking at girls' hairstyles. i found one i really like... but i highly doubt my hair would behave if it were that short. but it's really tempting, oh so tempting. for some reason, whenever my hair reaches the length it is now, i feel compelled to chop it all off.
sidebar/jena factoid: my hair has been: blonde, brown, orange, black, dark red, multi-colored, chunked, layered, highlighted, permed, short short (in 2nd grade) and loooong (past my butt!!). i thought i liked it best when it was blonde, but i'm currently satisfied with the dark color it is now because once you start dying your hair lighter, you're sucked into dying it allll the time.
so today i was supposed to meet with the ebay lady and she pushed the time back from 11:30 to 3:45. i am soooo glad i checked my email BEFORE i left the apartment... that would have sucked. i wish i knew ahead of time so i didn't get up so early today because now i feel and look like a zombie. ah well.

hot and bothered.
today reached 99 degrees!! (and some say global warming is a hoax...) the mystery of the closed-library has been solved. rick and i drove to the library only to discover it was closed. this is the third time this has happened to us. once was on president's day tho... apparently, as we discovered today, the library is closed on mondays. DOH!!
i am loving daylight savings time... the extra hour of sunlight has already proven to be useful today when rick and i played tennis. we got there late, when the sun was just shy of setting and stayed until about 7:00. i haven't played tennis is over a year and rick hasn't played since sixth grade... so needless to say we were a bit rusty. regardless, we managed to have fun. i wouldn't let us leave until we successfully hit the ball back and forth ten times. we got twelve!! we plan on playing again tomorrow if we aren't too sore. if i want to play again, i will also have to pop this lovely blister i got from hanging on the monkey bars yesterday when rick and i walked through the park. ye-ouch.
we finally finished watching Sybil. it seemed like a long movie (i can't believe it was originally a made-for-tv movie!!) but it was REALLY GOOD. sally field is one of my favorites. for those of you who aren't familiar with the movie, Sybil is based on a true story of a woman suffering from multiple-personality disorder. while we were watching the movie, rick noticed a scene was shot in the Ambassador Hotel which happens to be where 311 shot their album cover for "Evolver." the sad part is The Ambassador Hotel, a historic 500-room hollywood resort in its heyday, was torn in february 2006. los angeles seems to be infamous for reinventing itself and renovating, but unfortunately the city has no respect for the preservation of historical sites. despite protests, the city opted to demolish the hotel in order to build more schools although there is ample space in the surrounding areas. while destroying the site, the builders discovered methane gas, so the schools can't even open. this will only add to the $270 million budget. and so this discovery inspired me to create...
FIVE REASONS WHY I DISLIKE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA:
(beside the fact that it is far from my family).
1. smog/pollution.
2. TRAFFIC.
3. constant contruction and building/lack of respect to historical sites. A LOT of kewl places simply don't exisit anymore :(
4. THE HEAT. the sun is nice and all but not when it's burning your skin off while you are sitting in traffic.
5. overall wastefulness. (ie. sprinklers that face the pavement/street that are actually only wetting the cars that pass by).
FIVE REASONS WHY I LIKE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA:
1. the weather. as rick says, "california has two seasons: summer and not-so-summer."
2. LOTS to see and do.
3. career opportunities, especially in the creative industry.
4. palm trees. no lie... i am obsessed with those gangly trees!!
5. my strong, indescribable affinity to the area... perhaps a magnetic force at work?

i didn't get my picture taken with chris rock!!
today my mom and i lounged by the pool/went swimming. we had tickets to see the late late show with craig ferguson. the guest was andy garcia!! we got there on time but had to park in the parking garage at the grove because the security guy told us the CBS lot was full (or so we thought). so we stood in line, got numbers on our hands and were told to sit on a bench. the taping of the price of right must have just ended because we saw dozens of audience members/contestants. about 80% of the price is right crew bought something in the gift store after the show and ALL OF THEM looked like they had just visited disney world for the first time... i never saw a happier bunch of people, hehe. so we're finally about to be called into the show... there were about 30 of us still waiting and one of the five intern girls comes out and tells us they've reached capacity. we were pretty pissed because their audience wrangling method SUCKS. people were RANDOMLY assigned bench numbers (1, 2, 3 or 5). we were 2's. the girl called bench 1, bench 3, THEN 2... they didn't get to bench 5 at all. some of the people left over were among the first thirty people there!! (REALLY sucked to be them!!) it was ridiculous. they KNOW there's only 150 seats, yet they let more people in. they didn't bother to number us according to the order we arrived. we even had to sit through two lame prep guys trying to pump us up for the audience. the part that really sucks is that we originally sat on bench 1, but then moved to bench 2 after we realized that we were on the "wrong" bench. (not like anyone checked). it was all just a bunch of BS. we were given a number to call that guarantees us "VIP" seats to another taping. "VIP" only meaning they will let us like they were supposed to the first time. sooo my mom and i headed back to the grove and went into a few shops there. i bought a big, clunky heart necklace and redeemed my free pair of chones at victoria's secret. we saw CHRIS ROCK just standing by the door in barnes and nobles. i wouldn't have even noticed him if two guys didn't go up to him and ask to have their pictures taken with him. my mom and i weren't even sure if it was him at first... he looks REALLY skinny and YOUNG (until you approach him, then you can see his gray whiskers). he wasn't nice or approachable, he just was standing there like he didn't want to be there. i think he was just [begrudgingly] out in public to spark attention to his new movie. my mom and debated whether we should ask for a photo because we aren't really fans of his, but it seemed like the thing to do. afterall, you don't see chris rock just standing in every bookstore. having just exited the craig ferguson fiasco, i didn't have a camera on me (shocking, i know... but they weren't allowed in the studio that we didn't even get to go in) so my mom takes the photo of me and chris rock with her camera phone. at the moment she is taking the photo: rick calls and, mom hangs up on him AND the phone battery is dying. my mom takes the photo and says... "i don't even want to admit what just happened." the photo couldn't be saved because her photo capacity was at 100%. story of the day. it soooo figures!! hahaha!! i blame everything on my blue eyeliner... last time i wore it rick, tim, aldo and i weren't able to see incubus on jimmy kimmel. ugh. so i took some polaroids on hollywood and highland and we called it a day. we got back to the apartment(after sitting in some traffic) then rick, my mom and i enjoyed a nice dinner at the cheesecake factory. at least that went well.

celebrity droppings.
i stayed up and wound up watching "the hills" and "bam's unholy union" (two of my guilty pleasures). it was kewl because in the most recent episode (episode five) of bam's unholy union, bam and his friend drive to new hope, pa and go into a medeival store (the medeival gallery) that i've been in before!!

in fact, my dad bought me a pewter ring from that display case (shown above). it's celtic and it has a dark circle dug out with a little three-leaf clover (raised) in the center. it was kewl to be able to recognize the area. i also... and i HATE to admit this... watched the video for avril lavigne's new single "girlfriend." (hey, it was right there on MTV.com, i almost had no choice). i think she's trying to pass for ashlee simpson and it might work because nobody can really recognize ashlee simpson anyway, after all of her plastic surgery. so it seems avril has stolen her identity. she's blonde now (loooong extensions) but is still "bad ass" and "punk" AND has a new single named "girlfriend." hmmmm... sounds A LOT like ashlee, whose single was named "boyfriend." not at all an ashlee fan??? (my bf loathes her) than you will get a kick out of this petition.
and i'd hate to condone sites like the superficial but since i haven't had access to a national enquirer recently (i skim through them every time i go over my grandmother's house), i sometimes browse the celebrity "scandal" sites. usually i feel a bit envious over certain celebrities (especially when i find out how much they earn per movie!!) but part of me feels REALLY bad, like actually sorry for them. i guess it's good to realize that although celebrities seem larger than life sometimes, they are just "regular" people (who happen to be loaded). so it's kind of refreshing to see that with allll that money, kirsten dunst looks even pasty-er than myself or that lindsay lohan dresses like michael jackson. i suppose it's true that it's better to have a lifetime of anonymity, but for celebrities, this is true: the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about. unfortunately for them, "lack of private life" is a prerequisite for stardom.
BONUS: here's even more celebrity gossip for you: supposidely gisele bundchen had to gain 14 pounds to weigh enough to be able to walk in the dolce & gabbana show in Milan next week. that's pretty sickning... but at least some countries are taking the incentive to enforce healthier weight requirements for models.

R.E.M
no, not the band... the crazy, jerky movements your eyes make while you're asleep. i am currently preoccupied, watching my boyfriend's eyes dart back and forth beneath his eyelids. he fell asleep on my lap. (i'm perched with my laptop teetering on the arm of the couch... my usual spot). now i kind of want to know what i look like while i'm asleep. i've been dreaming of cats lately. it always bothers me when i can't remember a dream i had. i used to go to this website a lot, it's an online dream dictionary. it used to be easier to navigate before glamour took over the site. i don't know how accurate the interpretations are, but sometimes it's fun to browse around, plus there's horoscopes there too.
yesterday i begrudgingly went to a job temp place because i need money to pay the rent. i talked to dave nagel (who i can't say enough good things about) and he said, "no, don't get an office job!! you're too good for that!!" (nothing against people with office jobs, but that's like a prision sentence to an aspiring photographer). so dave gave me a good photography website and he has source books that he wants to give me. he has been so nice and so helpful... i really appreciate all he does. he told which photographers to steer clear of and which to pursue. i hope he gets a ton of jobs next month so i can PA for him. dave is the man!! so glad i met him.
today i scanned A LOT of photos. i posted some photos on flickr that i took with me colorsplash flash camera. some were from new years!! i also scanned all of the polaroid i took of and around dave's house. i will be posting them in small doses tonight, tomorrow and thursday because i do not want to bombard my contacts. i cleaned out the closet in the spare room so my mom has a place to put her clothes when she comes to visit... which is SOON!!!!!! :D can't wait. she wants to go hiking, kayaking and whalewatching. we also have tickets for the late late show with craig ferguson and we are going to make meatloaf. those are the plans. i also thought of something really kewl (a surprise!!) that i know she'd want to do... but i don't know if it's possible yet... hmmmmm. i'm determined to make it work though. i need to make some phone calls.
rick and went to library and got some mooovies. i also checked some photography books out. i beat my mother and rick at scrabble today. during dinner, rick and i watched the dinner game (a french comedy) after i vetoed lost in la mancha (not enough johnny depp in the first five minutes of the film). and i talked my best friend tonight!! :) she's a working girl now. full-time. human resources. and she has the cute matchy-matchy business attire to prove it. : P hehehe. the only downside: she won't start "accruing" vacation time until she's been with the company for SIX MONTHS. which means... no andrea visits any time soon :( ugh.

week in review
appologies for being MIA this past week. here is what you missed... (complete with links for further exploration!!)
wednesday: (valentine's day) i made rick 20 heart-shaped carrot cake cupcakes. i went all ghetto-martha stewart on those puppies!! i couldn't find carrot cake cake mix, so i had to buy spice cake mix and add my own grated carrots. then i realized that i forgot to buy raisins... so i jacked some from the raisin bran box. (now rick will know why his raisin bran only has one scoop of raisins instead of two scoops, hehe). i topped them with cream cheese icing and they are delicious!! rick got me roses and a "get well" balloon (because he felt bad no one was buying it) and he made me dinner... pad thai and ginger chicken!! it didn't come out too bad considering we don't have a wok and it was his first try. he did accidentally dump waaay too much garlic in the ginger chicken though... but it was edible!!
thursday: rick, tim, aldrin and i drove (aka: sat in traffic) all the way to hollywood to go to the jimmy kimmel show. we had tickets to see incubus perform a mini-concert. we get there (a little late) all worried we weren't going to be let in only to discover that incubus cancelled :( because brandon boyd was sick. majorly disappointing. so we ate at CPK instead. since i signed up for tickets online, i wasn't notified of the cancellation and the date they rescheduled for (feb 25th) is now sold-out. which sucks. but thanks to tim and aldrin we had a fun ride home talking about portals and how it would feel to wake up in a field naked with hard nipples.
friday: we went to rick's parents' house and put together a computer armoire. standing back, admiring a big desk you assembled that was once merely a pile of wood and screws is rewarding. we also did some laundry there. we went to rick's sister's house to bring his neices some of the cupcakes i made rick for valentine's day. we talked to rick's mom for awhile and left around 10:30 pm (with a big bag or oranges from their backyeard, of course).
saturday: we were supposed to hang out with my friend tyler, but i never got a hold of him!! :( so rick and i went swimming instead. it was beautiful outside... 87 degrees!! the water was pretty cold, but it felt good to be swimming outside in february (considering all the snow i am missing back home). i scanned a bunch of polaroids. then rick took me to buffalo exchange so i could sell some clothes. out the entire BOX of clothes, only TWO items made the cut. (which is ridiculous because i was looking to sell the same type of clothing i saw in the store!!) i never knew a thrift store could be so picky!! of all things, one of the two items i "sold" was a yellow tee shirt that says, "Gay? Fine by me" that i got for free at college. it was either $5 cash or $8 toward store credit. so i took the store credit and bought myself a paul frank tee that is new with tags!! so i guess it wasn't a wasted trip afterall...
sunday: rick's parents saw our apartment for the first time!! then rick drove them to the airport. i met up with rebecca (miss rutabegabunny) for an afternoon of antiquing. we went to an antique mall in agoura hills, but we weren't able to find any "treasures" just a lot of shabby chic crap and soap with poppy seeds in them. but there is an antique store run by a little old lady that seems to have potential. the prices weren't too bad and the little old lady was nice AND the store didn't smell like soap. then we went exotic thai and ate soup. (the soups there are better than the entrees, trust me). after that we took these lovely double self-portrait shots in the bathroom (a signature rutabega tradition). and now there's a vintage poolside dress-up party in the mix. can't wait for that!! i'm so glad i met someone kewl who's into photography, polaroids, old movies, flickr and roadtrip adventures.
monday: went with rick to get new tires. when we got back to the apartment, there was a box in front of the door... it was a barrel of utz pretzel nuggets (my absolute favorite!!) with a note from my friend zac!! everyone who knows me knows i am a pretzel fanatic. it was quite a pleasant surprise, especially since i had just finished off my stash of pretzels. zac has always been such a thoughtful friend. i've known him since 11th grade and although we weren't able to hang out much while we were both in college, it's still always like old times when we get together. i really appreciate his friendship (and sense of humor).
for dinner, rick and i were planning on making some salmon... but it reaked. never freezing fish again... bad idea. so we had to run out and buy some chicken. we were about to help ourselves to some cornflake chicken (at 8:30) when we heard tapping on our window. my first thought: "oh shit, it's the neighbors..." but it was aldrin and jen!! so they watched us eat. luckily they had just gorged themselves at P.F. Changs because rick and i weren't about to share. we are very selfish with our cornflake chicken. and although i hate to admit it, i watched the hills and bam's unholy union on mtv.com (because we don't have cable).
wednesday: (valentine's day) i made rick 20 heart-shaped carrot cake cupcakes. i went all ghetto-martha stewart on those puppies!! i couldn't find carrot cake cake mix, so i had to buy spice cake mix and add my own grated carrots. then i realized that i forgot to buy raisins... so i jacked some from the raisin bran box.
Fine by me" that i got for free at college. it was either $5 cash or $8 toward store credit. so i took the store credit and bought myself a paul frank tee that is new with tags!! so i guess it wasn't a wasted trip afterall...

bienvenue/welcome... now go to sleep.
it's 3:30 am, technically friday, although my mind is still stuck on thursday. my guy thinks i go to bed too late... here's proof that he's right. he pointed out i never go to bed the same day i wake up. "how can someone stay up til 5 am on the internet?" he wants to know. i'll tell you how... i just got finished repo-ing my friend aldrins netflix queue. at the top of the list: "me, you and everyone we know" (never saw it); "what have i done to deserve this" (i ADORE almodovar); and "the departed" (amazing movie)!!
my to-do list for tomorrow looks something like this: drop off/sell clothes at buffalo exchange; take lots of pictures; brainstorm for valentine's day; post new fisheye shots; finally start reading dirty blonde: the diaries of courtney love. (books that have more photos than words... always a plus). and hopefully tomorrow night ricardo and i will watch "the crime of father amaro." you usually can't go wrong with a gael garcia bernal movie, unless of course it's "bad education." i ADORE almodovar films... but that one is just too hard to get into. i'll have to give it another try when i'm more in the mood to struggle through a movie, waiting for the great plot twist.
tip of the night: check out movies from the library because usually there's a good selection and usually it's free :) (except if you live in thousand oaks).
i need to go to bed now to prove that i don't always stay up til 5 am... a bientôt!!
